Eugene F. Roop is president of Bethany Theological Seminary, Richmond, Indiana, and also Wieand Professor of Biblical Studies. He has taught there since 1977, after teaching at Earlham School of Religion in 1970–77. He is an ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren and has pastored churches in Indiana, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
Roop is known for his disciplined yet devotional approach to Bible study, his transparent spiritual and prayer life, and his commitment to the Christian faith. This commentary is an expression of his lifelong enjoyment and study of biblical narrative. He brings to his teaching and writing a deep commitment to the Bible as central to the teaching and preaching ministry of the congregation. His articles have appeared in various religious publications, and his books include Genesis (in the BCBC series), Let the Rivers Run, Heard in Our Land, and (with others) A Declaration on Peace.
After studying at Manchester College (B.S.), Roop earned further degrees at Bethany Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Claremont Graduate University (Ph.D.). Through various programs, he also studied as a postgraduate in the USA and the UK. He has served extensively on boards and agencies for the community and for the church—congregational, district, and denominational.
Roop and his wife, Delora Mishler Roop, are members of the Richmond Church of the Brethren. They have two children and three grandchildren.
