Mary H. Schertz

Mary H. Schertz is professor emeritus of New Testament at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana. She is co-compiler of Take Our Moments and Our Days: An Anabaptist Prayer Book, Vol. 1 Ordinary Time (Herald, 2007) and Vol. 2 Advent Through Pentecost (Herald, 2010) as well as co-author of Seeing the Text: Exegesis for Students of Greek and Hebrew (Abingdon, 2001). In addition to publishing articles and essays, she co-edited Beautiful upon the Mountains: Biblical Essays on Mission, Peace, and the Reign of God (Herald, 2003). After earning an MDiv from AMBS, she completed her PhD in New Testament from Vanderbilt University School of Religion in 1993. During her service at AMBS, Mary thoroughly enjoyed working with students in the classroom, as an adviser, and in more informal relationships. She led the Institute of Mennonite Studies for twenty-one years, working with numerous publications and many study conferences. She co-founded Vision: A Journal for Theology and the Church with leaders at Canadian Mennonite University and served as the AMBS editor for the journal's first two decades. She has also been involved with Bridgefolk, a movement for Catholic and Mennonite dialogue, and the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery. She continues to work with confessional Bible study in various settings and happily lives, writes, and worships in a vibrant community called South Central Elkhart where part of the charm is being part of a twenty percent minority in a highly diversified neighborhood.
