The first Mennonite missionary to the Dominican Republic arrived in 1945, and the first church was organized in 1948 with a membership of thirteen people. The work prospered, but at the same time there was also much opposition. The missionaries worked hard to turn the work over to native Dominicans. Church buildings, a retreat camp, and other institutions have been built. Today the conference is largely autonomous, but still receives some support from North America. It is a member of MWC.

There are 2,900 memebers and 39 congregations.
