John Newcomer was a Mennonite of Hempfield Township in Pennsylvania in 1777. He was jailed for refusing to turn over names of men eligible to be drafted (from his congregation/village). He is (almost certainly) the same John Newcomer as the Hempfield gunsmith who refused to make rifles for the military in 1775. As a result of this refusal, he was told he could no longer practice his trade at all.

This story appears in chapter 10 of Land, Piety, Peoplehood by Richard MacMaster (Herald Press, 1985).
