-John P. Klassen was living in Chortitza-Rosental in southern Russia during the early 1920s. His village faced the brutality of civil war and starvation. Mennonite Central Committee sent relief supplies to his community. John Klassen gathered up the spent bullets that littered the ground of his village and were embedded in the walls of homes. He melted down the bullets to make a medallion of thanks to give to MCC.
-Story told by Paul Klassen (currently living in Bluffton, OH), who is JP Klassen’s son. The story is also found on pages 404-406 of  Feeding the Hungry by PC Hiebert (MCC – Scottdale, 1929).
