Resolution on Sale of Arms, etc.

WHEREAS MC Canada is holding its inaugural Assembly at Lethbridge, Alberta, in July 2000, and

WHEREAS the new Millennium is an appropriate time to make new attempts to establish peace in a troubled world, and

WHEREAS the Government of Canada has a long history of supporting peace-keeping initiatives in various parts of the world, and

WHEREAS the Government of Canada has strongly supported the abolition of land mines as a weapon of war (which initiatives Mennonite Church Canada applauds sincerely), and

WHEREAS MC Canada has as a fundamental belief, the principle of pacifism and non-violence, both in personal relations as well as relations between nations, and

WHEREAS Canada and other nations continue to permit the sale of arms, munitions and implements of war to nations or groups where armed conflicts continue to cause death and injury to many thousands annually;

NOW BE IT RESOLVED that the Annual Assembly 2000 of MC Canada adopt a formal resolution urging the Government of Canada to stop all sales of arms, munitions and implements of war to foreign countries, whether "allies," members of NATO, or others.

Context of the Resolution

The resolution was presented to the first delegate assembly of Mennonite Church Canada by the Resolutions Committee of the meeting. The resolution was approved with limited discussion.
